So you want to join BSV
Let's set sail. Three landfalls between here and the Shire — scroll on, and the ship will take you through them one at a time.
Leg 1: Talk to a captain
Message one of the captains on Instagram and say hello. That is the whole of the first step — there is no form and no application. Tell them who you are and why the brotherhood interests you.
Leg 2: Become a Hopeful
Once the captains have invited you in, you come through as a Hopeful. This is where you get involved: meetups, events, charity work, the themed posts the chapter puts out each week. Activity is the thing that counts. Turn up, join in, get to know the brothers.
Leg 3: Become a Villain
When the captains think you are ready, you are put forward. This is the longest leg by a distance, and it is meant to be — the patch means something precisely because it is not quick. It is worth it.

What counts
The beard is the surface
Underneath it is brotherhood, loyalty, respect and charity. The captains are looking for people who show up and mean it, not for a particular length of beard. We are Black Shire, in North England — one chapter of a worldwide brotherhood, so if you are further afield there is very likely one nearer to you.
